1. Hughes’s “Theme for English B” is an example of a modernist poem that is suspicious of trying to tell us what is truth. Hughes is asked by his English teacher to “let the page come out of you” and that this page “will be true.” However, while Hughes tries to follow the suggestion and write a true poem, the poem itself undermines the idea that Hughes can, by himself only, say what is really true about himself only. The truth is too complicated.
